Women and Trauma Federal Partners Committee – 2011
This report discusses the importance of recognizing the impact of trauma on women and girls. Notes that women and girls are often victims of violence, and that the resulting trauma has long-term consequences on their lives. Summarizes the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, which found that trauma and abuse experienced in childhood result in a wide range of problems in adulthood, including substance abuse, mental and physical health problems, and high-risk sexual behaviors. Notes the development of trauma-informed care. Describes how different federal programs are working to address the issue of women and trauma, including a variety of agencies within the departments of Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, Justice, Labor, and Veterans Affairs. New federal partners include Housing and Urban Development, the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and the Peace Corps. Appendix includes lists of participating agencies and individuals and recommendations from the Federal Partners Committee roundtable meeting on women and trauma.
