National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – 2020

This fact sheet explains that caregivers who pay attention to their own physical and emotional health are better able to handle the challenges of supporting someone with mental illness. Common physical signs of stress are then listed and the following strategies for improving physical well-being are recommended: exercise daily, eat well, get enough sleep, avoid alcohol and drugs, and practice relaxation exercises. Additional recommendations are made for recharging, avoiding guilt, noticing the positive, and gathering strength from others.
