As a matter of fact: Adverse childhood experiences and prevention

National Children’s Advocacy Center – 2011

A prevention fact sheet on adverse childhood experiences. Presents facts and data on the negative long-term consequences of child victimization. Summarizes studies that identify the negative impact of parental verbal aggression, sexual abuse, and witnessing or experiencing victimization on children and youth. Notes that adverse childhood experiences can lead to mental health problems (such as depression and suicide), substance abuse, and other family problems in adulthood. Victims of child abuse are at increased risk for marrying substance abusers.
