A newsletter from a network of California organizations focusing on family and community strengthening. Contains articles on child abuse prevention and early intervention, building strength-based families, father involvement, postpartum depression, violence prevention, and the five protective factors. An article on child abuse and neglect lists indicators for child maltreatment. In one study, the presence of substance abuse is an indicator of concern in 8.6% of families with a first assessment. Substance abuse is an indicator for 75.8% of families rated as “in crisis” and needing a second assessment. Out of approximately 5,500 families in the study, nearly 300 required some form of substance abuse intervention.
