Safety intervention during CPS intake with methamphetamine using caregivers

National Resource Center for Child Protective Services

Provides guidelines for child protective services (CPS) information gathering and response to reports of possible methamphetamine use affecting children. Describes challenges in information gathering in cases of suspected neglect or abuse of children related to caregiver’s meth abuse, manufacturing or trafficking. Challenges include limited information at intake, informant’s fear of repercussion by family, and determining vulnerability and danger level (present or impending) of the child. Includes sample questions for CPS workers, considerations for CPS worker safety, and critical thinking exercise.
