Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality – 2012
A brief summary of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) on children of alcoholic parents. Reports that 7.5 million children under 18 live with a parent who has had an alcohol use disorder in the past year. Notes that these children are at increased risk for abuse or neglect and emotional or cognitive problems, and are four times more likely to develop alcohol problems themselves. Most of the children live in two parent households with one or both parents experiencing alcohol problems. In households with single parents with alcohol use disorders, the majority of children live with the mother. Includes links to resources to help children when a parent has an alcohol problem.
