Helping Children Affected by Parental Substance Abuse: Activities and Photocopiable Worksheets

Intended to assist counselors, social workers, psychologists, and teachers in facilitating educational/treatment groups for children of addicted parents, this workbook explains the risks faced by children from substance-abusing families and provides worksheets and activities to use with children and young people affected by parental substance abuse. It begins by explaining the diverse needs of children with substance-abusing parents, the benefits of group interventions, and barriers to children’s participation in groups. Important tips of facilitators are listed. Following sections discuss best practices and treatment for children of substance-abusing parents and address: understanding addiction; letting go of shame; letting go of control; understanding and managing feelings; safety and self-care; building relationships; improving impulse control; problem solving and goal setting; and competence, mastery, and self-efficacy. Appendices include coping skills bingo cards, values words, and additional activities.
