As a matter of fact: The relationship between child maltreatment and adult health

This fact sheet explains the long-term negative consequences of child maltreatment in adulthood. Lists the physical and mental health conditions that are common to people who have experienced childhood abuse. Notes that adults who were maltreated as children are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including drug, alcohol, and cigarette use. Also describes how adult victims of abuse are more likely to utilize medical and mental health services, including costly emergency room visits. Notes that female victims of child sexual abuse are more likely to be physically and sexually abused in adulthood.
