Reframing Recovery: The Limitations of an ASFA Driven Approach To Substance Use (Article in Family Integrity and Justice Quarterly)

Jody Brook – 2022

This article explains it is antithetical to the promotion of public health, child well-being, and social justice to continue to utilize the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 as it exists for families with substance use disorder (SUD) in a time when the professional knowledge base has solidly established that SUD is a chronic disease, characterized by periods of remission and relapse, there is a lack of publicly funded family-centered available treatment for this disease, and there are racial disparities in surveillance rates, access to treatment, and availability of evidence-based treatments. Considerations for modification are discussed.
