This chapter examines the impact of the social and family environment on the risks of child abuse through drugs. Risks include social chaos, poorly educated parents, parental beliefs, cultural practices, socially or geographically isolated families, parental refusal of care, the special risks to chronically ill children, parental psychiatric illness, alcohol, illicit drug use by adults in the home, and interacting influences in the child’s home environment. 4 references.
